We’re thrilled to announce the Testnet deployment of our core infrastructure — the foundational layer that will power the next era of BTCFi on Sui.

Get ready: the first public-facing release is coming very soon in stage3 of Testnet, and it’s going to change the way Bitcoin moves, earns, and grows across ecosystems. Stay tuned.

The Journey So Far

Since mid 2024, Native has been meticulously focused on one mission: To unlock Bitcoin liquidity for DeFi in the most secure and simplest way possible, making BTC more capital-efficient.

But initially, we aimed to unify the fragmented Bitcoin ecosystem by building an interoperability layer to pool liquidity. However, Bitcoin “L2s” never gained traction, due to:

Problems with settlement (BitVM2 - an optimistic, inefficient trust minimized Bitcoin construction for L2s)
High costs and very long challenge periods
Many “L2s” are sidechains that don’t inherit Bitcoin’s full security
Usability Hurdles: The Lightning Network struggles with complex channel management
Scattered developer and ecosystem support
Arguably worse tech than majority of L1/L2 Ecosystems

The Pivot: Same Mission, New Rails

Instead of waiting for Bitcoin L2s to catch up, and after analyzing the existing blockchains, tech, user and liquidity growth, we made a decisive move:

To use Sui as a base chain to grow BTCFi

This pivot gave us a powerful trifecta:

Native’s advanced Bitcoin interoperability

Leveraging Zero Trust Architecture, we enable non-custodial, trust-minimized nBTC for DeFi. We are establishing the first ever decentralized, non-custodial BTCFi system!

We are rolling out the Stage 1 of our Alpha Testnet, starting today (April 7th):

Stage 1: Core Protocols & nBTC Minting (First week of April)

This stage features the “backend”. Sui packages (smart contracts) are permissionless and anyone can use them. We will be shipping documentation soon, explaining how to run relayer and contribute. The User Interface will come in Stage 3.
